"Nature doesn't create energy and then throw it away. Nature uses the energy." (14:30 in this cast)
Dr. Gerald Pollack is a Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington, internationally recognized scientist and author most well known for his revolutionary studies in the world of water.
His groundbreaking discoveries about water's "fourth phase" and its role in biological systems are challenging conventional wisdom about how our bodies work and opening new frontiers in health and healing.
I was excited to explore this topic with Dr. Pollack because water is the foundation of life, yet our understanding of it remains surprisingly limited.
His research suggests we may need to fundamentally rethink water's role in human health and biology.
This episode is great for:
Health-conscious individuals looking for natural approaches to wellness
Those interested in the science behind traditional healing practices
People dealing with chronic health issue
Anyone interested in understanding in alternative viewpoints of how our bodies work relative to the current science narrative
Ideas that really stuck out to me:
The water in our bodies is different: Contrary to conventional belief that water in our cells is just like water in a glass, research shows cell water forms organized, crystal-like structures. This "fourth phase", "EZ water" (structured water) has unique properties vital for cellular function.
Water can act as a battery: When water forms its fourth phase, it separates into negative and positive charges - essentially creating a battery. This suggests water isn't just a passive participant in biological processes but could be a key source of cellular energy.
Light, especially infrared, builds EZ water: Infrared light (including simple heat) helps create this structured water in our cells. Infrared light is actually everywhere we just can’t see it. This also explains why sunshine, saunas, and other forms of heat exposure make us feel energized.
Cancer cells show disrupted water structure: Recent research suggests cancer cells have low electrical potential due to insufficient EZ water. This opens exciting new possibilities for understanding and treating cancer through water-based approaches. Previous guest Dr. Katie Deming (conscious oncologist) spoke to this
Traditional health practices may work through water: Many time-tested health practices like earthing, herbs, and sunbathing might work because they are actually helping build structured water in our cells. This provides a potential scientific framework for understanding ancient wisdom.
Our energy may not all come from food: The discovery that water can act as a battery raises fascinating questions about human energy production. Some people's ability to survive long periods without food like the 300,000 global breatharians might be explained by getting energy directly from light through structured water.
Simple interventions can improve cellular water: There are several practical ways to enhance the structured water in our cells, from drinking more water, getting sunlight exposure, consuming certain herbs, and earthing.
What fascinates me most about Dr. Pollack's work is that it ties together a unifying mechanic related to so many healthy practices that is largely unacknowledged.
So many traditional practices - from sungazing to herbal medicine - suddenly make more sense when viewed through the lens of structured water.
I have a friend in Austin who believes she cured her cancer due to her focus on structured water. Dr. Pollack’s research and these personal anecdotes make me hopeful that more research is done here.
I hope you enjoy this conversation!

He's talking about surface tension, and drawing some very odd pseudoscience conclusions, which is why he hasn't gotten his work published in reputable journals. As always, Reddit has some good breakdowns of where he goes off the rails: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/1444fn/a_theory_by_dr_gerald_pollack_says_that_there_is/
Pollack changed the way I look at electromagnetics, and how our mitochondria may be able to buffer stress from the wireless radiation and chemicals from our environment!
Once I was able to tie in his research on how exclusion zone water absorbs light in the infrared spectrum of 3000nm, which is what our mitochondria run on, everything started to make sense. Our metabolism runs more on light than on food, and we need light to create oxygen. No oxygen = more chronic disease.
Thank you for the interview Scott.
