“The big things that you see on the internet today is that people read books read a book every week. It's like, How about practicing something you read? You know, that's just collecting information. That's like putting 10 books in the library every day without ] knowing how to properly understand and apply it in your life. (19:54 in this cast)
Dandapani Satgunasingam is a Hindu priest, entrepreneur and former monk who spent 10 years training in a monastery under the guidance of his guru.
After leaving the monastery, he's dedicated his life to helping people understand and work with their mind to create lasting change.
His unique blend of ancient wisdom and practical application has made him a sought-after speaker and coach for entrepreneurs and leaders worldwide.
I was excited to have this conversation with Dandapani because his structured, practical approach to spirituality addresses many of the challenges I've encountered in my own journey.
His perspective on maintaining reason while pursuing spiritual growth especially resonated and is a service to many seeking practical ways to apply ancient wisdom.
This episode is great for:
Entrepreneurs and high-achievers looking to integrate spiritual practice without abandoning reason and drive
Anyone feeling scattered and wanting practical tools to develop focus
People interested in spirituality but wary of approaches that abandon reason
Parents wanting to cultivate presence with their children while developing themselves
Those seeking a structured approach to spiritual development
Ideas that really stuck out to me:
The mind is our primary tool for creating reality, yet we rarely understand how it works. Just like a Photoshop expert can create amazing things because they understand the tool deeply, mastering our mind allows us to create the life we want. Most of us try to build our dreams without understanding our primary creative instrument.
We are not the mind - we are awareness moving within the mind. This fundamental distinction is crucial for developing real control over your mental state. Think of awareness as a ball of light that you can consciously direct to different areas of your mind. Wherever awareness goes, that becomes your experience.
The three levels of mind are the conscious, subconscious, and superconscious. They work like a three-story building. To access the superconscious (intuition), we must first organize and clean up the subconscious floor. Most people try to bypass this by consuming more information rather than processing what's already there.
Focus is trainable through integration, not addition. Rather than creating another "practice" to add to your busy life, use everyday activities like conversations with loved ones as opportunities to train concentration. When talking with his daughter, Dandapani gives her his complete undivided attention making it both a spiritual practice and a way to deepen their connection.
The spiritual path benefits from structure and reason. Contrary to popular belief, Dandapani believes abandoning reason for pure surrender often leads nowhere. Like any other pursuit - from business to athletics spiritual growth requires clear philosophy, defined goals, specific practices, and a supporting lifestyle. Reason helps us navigate this path safely.
Purpose emerges from a clarified mind. Many people try to "find their purpose" while their mind is cluttered and scattered. Focus allows us to stay in self-reflection long enough to actually see what we want. Like trying to get to know someone, it requires dedicated, focused time.
Simple practices compound over time. Five minutes of focused self-reflection each morning might seem insignificant, but that same time spent at dinner with friends equals twenty-four five-minute segments. We readily give our attention outward but resist giving it to ourselves.
Many people I know resist spirituality because they believe that they must abandon so many things that have served them like reason and willpower.
This is just a misconception. I appreciate Dandapani’s approach to integrating these aspects of life to the path of expanding awareness and consciousness evolution.
I think the practicality he shares is something many people long for.
I hope you enjoy this conversation!
