I see the world of energy (Qi) as the next frontier for many fixtures of the human experience.
Many wisdom traditions, including RenXue where I have primarily studied for the past 4+ years, see Qi as the fundamental building block of reality.
The more we understand it through widely accepted means like Science, the more humans will be able to work with it to create a more compelling experience.
Today’s guest is scientist and author Garrett Yount . He has been studying subtle energy and its impact on healing for the past 20 years.
His interest began when he started to experience clairvoyant phenomena as a child. This eventually led him to a career in advancing our understanding of molecular neurobiology, consciousness and extended human capacities. Through his research he has performed extensive experiments with spiritual healers and bio-field practitioners from around the world.
His new book Why Vibes Matter: Understand Your Energy and Learn How to Use it Wisely covers in depth his experiences as a researcher in this field and the large body of available research on subtle energy to date.
In this conversation, we talk about the most salient learnings from his experience.
I found the most interesting part of the conversation to be around human’s natural capacity for healing and how we can think about restoring this innate ability that our conditioning has largely made us forget as a species.
Interesting ideas include:
How subtle energy reveals itself at the conscious, subconscious, and superconscious level
A hypothesis for understanding potentially the primary mechanism behind energy healing
Where we can start to if we seek to learn self healing
How subtle energy shows up in how we relate to others and physical locations
What we know about the heart as a perceptual mechanism and emitter of energy
His upcoming research on telepathy
A test you can perform on yourself to experience the power of the mind to shift our energy and physicality
How sound beyond our perceptual sensing organs often impacts how we feel in certain places
Why understanding energy can help our species in our next step of evolution
I am very eager to see this field continue to become more mainstream and evolve. At this point it feels inevitable.
If you’re interested in a wide ranging primer on the topic, I definitely recommend Garrett’s book and following along with the research he is doing in partnership with the Institute of Noetic Sciences!
Till next time,
-Scott

Excellent podcast. I am reading Vasistha’s Yoga which is deep and esoteric. Listening to your guest validated what I have experienced through wisdom. I needed that right now so thank you!
Definitely listening to this one! Joe Hudson asked me 'what is energy' on our podcast chat the other day and I didn't have a compelling answer...
